Diamonds are most often judged by the “four - Cs”: clarity, carat, color, and cut.
The clarity of a diamond is measured by how many internal defects the diamond contains. These defects, often invisible to the untrained eye, are called inclusions. Inclusions may be crystals of a foreign material or another diamond crystal. The defects might also be structural imperfections caused by tiny cracks that may put forth a cloudy appearnace. The total number, size, hue, location, orientation, and visibility of inclusions can all affect the clarity of a diamond.
Carat weight is a measure of the mass of a diamond. A carat is defined as a fifth of one gram or two-hundred milligrams. With everything else being equal, the value of a diamond gains significantly in relation to its carat weight. Bigger diamonds are harder to find and more sought after for use as gemstones.
