The quality of a diamond is mainly determined by its facility to reflect light and return white and colored light. Carat weight is simply the weight of a diamond. Color and clarity are important when determining the rarity of a diamond. Cut is the C that helps determine the light performance of a diamond.
Exceedingly slight color disparities are of major importance when determining how rare a diamond is. However, they are never a make or break factor in determining its splendor. Laypeople often ballyhoo this factor as the most important part of a diamond's beauty, but the other factors can be just as important, if not more so.
Did you know a flawless diamond is no more beautiful to the unaided human eye than a grade in the middle of the scale? Extremely understated differences in clarity are very important to determine a gemstone’s rarity, but they only affect beauty when they’re in the very low end of the scale. Conventionally, a clarity scale has 11 grades. The highest eight grades have zero flaws that the naked eye can detect.
The weight of a diamond may be important, but it doesn't always illustrate the perceived size of a diamond. For instance, a shallow cut diamond will have a greater diameter, and will most likely appear larger. A diamond with superior light presentation will look considerably bigger than it actually is.
Cut of a diamond may be the most difficult to judge. A diamond with facets cut only a few degrees out of alignment can result in a poor quality stone. For a round brilliant cut, there is a balance between "brilliance" and "fire." When a diamond is cut for too much "fire," it looks fake. Well-executed round brilliant cut diamond rings should reflect light upwards and make the diamond have a white appearance when viewed from the top. An inferior cut will produce a stone that appears dark at the center and in some extreme cases the ring settings may show through the top of the diamond as shadows.
